 Open to all Students Grades 6-12 with two divisions:

Junior Division: grades 6-8

Senior Division: grades 9-12

Deadline for entries: February 15, 2019

Awards:

* Prize Money:

    Jr. Division: 1st-$125; 2nd-$100; 3rd-$50.00.

   Sr. Division: 1st-$150; 2nd-$125; 3rd -$75.00.

* Winning essays will be published in our newsletter.

* Winners will be invited to read their essays at a 2018 meeting and have them taped for later         broadcast on
   Campbell County Media Central Public Access Cable TV.

* Winners will receive a one year membership in the CCH&GS.

TOPIC SELECTION: Chose from one of the following topics for your essay:
          1. An Ancestor who lived or lives in Campbell County-tell where they came from, where they settled and how they lived.  Describe the historical significance of this ancestor in the community and your life.  Photos welcome.
          2. A Campbell County event of historic significance, such as a Civil War Battle, a murder (past or present) a visit by a politician-state or national, past or present, etc. If someone in your family was involved, describe the significance of this event to the county and its people.
          3. A famous Campbell County person, such as a politician, inventor, business-man or woman, writer, artist, musician, clergy person, educator, etc. - describe the historical significance of this person to the county and its people.
          4. History of a Campbell County town, community, school, church or other site - describe the historical significance of this community or site to the county and its people.

Special Note on topic selection:  Popular topics such as the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire, the Pearl Bryan Murder, etc. are of high interest to students of local history, but do not always make for the most interesting essays due to the fact that so much has already been written about them.  While not forbidden, essays on these topics may want to approach them from a different angle or personal perspective.

GUIDELINES:

* Written essay must be typed, double-spaced and at least 1000 words. 

* Must contain a separate page listing at least 3 sources of documentation, with at least one primary source (an interview or original document.)  Plagiarism (direct copying from sources) will cause a student’s paper to be disqualified.

* Must contain a separate cover page with the following information:

                                  Campbell County 2019 Essay Contest

                                                   Title of Essay

Student’s Name

    Student’s phone number

      School

      Grade

Teacher’s Name

* Essay must be submitted in electronic form (Word document attachment or body of email) to Shirlene Jensen at:  ensjen392@gmail.com

* All essays become the property of Campbell County Historical Society Archives.

Writers are encouraged to visit the Campbell County Historical

& Genealogical Society’s Research Library and Museum

to gather information for their essays.
